5 Energy Saving Tips

Heating equipment

Have your space and water heating equipment serviced annually. If you have a forced-air heating system, clean or replace your furnace filter every month, or as required.

Water heating

Lower your water-heater thermostat setting from your home's current temperature to 55°C.

Ventilation systems

If you have a heat recovery ventilation system, clean the filter, core and grills regularly. You can find detailed instructions on how to care for your system in NRCan's publication Heat Recovery Ventilator. Call 1.800.387.2000 to obtain a free copy of the publication or visit oee.nrcan.gc.ca/publications and look under 'Heating and Cooling.'

Energy-efficient lighting

Install energy-efficient lighting in your home. Energy-efficient bulbs, such as ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescents, last longer and reduce electricity consumption.

Energy-efficient appliances, home electronics and office equipment

When purchasing appliances, home electronics and office equipment, look for those displaying the ENERGY STAR® mark, the international symbol for energy efficiency. An ENERGY STAR® labelled computer in 'sleep' mode consumes about 80 per cent less electricity than it does in full-power mode. For more information go to energystar.gc.ca.

EnerGuide Explained

Address

Identifies the house to which the rating applies.

Energy Efficiency Rating

Allows comparison of energy performance between houses of the same size. The more efficient the house, the higher the rating number.

Scale

The low end of the scale represents a house that is built to minimum building code standards.

100 represents a house that is very well insulated, airtight, sufficiently ventilated and that requires no purchased energy (such as a solar powered home.)

Estimated Annual Energy Consumption for the House Under Stantdard Operating Conditions

Allows comparison of the energy consumption of the house to similar houses, and helps esitmate energy costs.

File Number

Official EnerGuide number assigned to homes that have been evaluated.

Evaluated By

Name and telephone number of the EnerGuide service organization.

Date

The date that the energy efficency evaluation was conducted.

Grant Programs

Home Energy Evaluation

Once you've received your EnerGuide rating and the full report, you're eligible for a $100 rebate from the Alberta Government.

All homeowners who have an evaluation (D-evaluation) conducted by a Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) certified energy advisor will receive a $100 rebate.

An additional $100 rebate is provided to all homeowners who complete a post-evaluation (E-Evaluation) by NRCan. This is an evaluation after recommendations for improving your EnerGuide rating are provided by an evaluator and the recommendations are implemented in the home.

No application is necessary. Your NRCan-certified energy evaluator submits all required documentation to NRCan, which then provides Climate Change Central with the required information to issue a rebate cheque.

Climate Change Central administers the Government of Alberta's energy efficiency rebate program. The Government of Alberta has committed $36 million over three years to help Albertans reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Insulation

All Albertans who participate in the federal government's ecoENERGY Retrofit Program, perform qualifying insulation upgrades, and undertake a post-retrofit evaluation on or after January 1, 2009 are eligible for a provincial rebate.

Please note: The federal government announced on March 31, 2010 that the grant portion of the federal ecoENERGY Retrofit Program has ended. The Alberta program has not been affected by this decision and Albertans are still eligible for up to $3,150 in insulation rebates. The rebate is available to all homeowners who perform qualifying insulation upgrades as identified in their home evaluation report. Qualifying work includes ceiling insulation, exterior wall insulation, exposed floor insulation, basement header insulation and foundation insulation (inclusive of basement insulation and crawl space insulation).

No application is necessary. Once you have completed your post (E-evaluation) evaluation, your NRCan-certified energy evaluator submits the required documentation to NRCan, which then provides Climate Change Central with the required information to issue a rebate cheque.

Domestic Hot Water

All Albertans who purchase and install a qualifying replacement domestic hot water system on or after January 1, 2009 are eligible for one of the following rebates:

  • $250 for an ENERGY STAR® qualified instantaneous (tankless), gas-fired water heater with an energy factor (EF) of 82% or higher.
  • $300 for an ENERGY STAR® qualified instantaneous (tankless), gas-fired water heater with an EF of 90% or higher.
  • $300 for a gas-storage water heater that has a thermal efficiency of 90% or higher.
